How to Combine Kite and Shopify Discounts
Kite uses Shopify’s Native Discount Engine, which allows distinct offers to "stack" or combine, provided the rules are set correctly. Follow these steps to set up a valid combination:
- Create Your Kite Promotion
- Set up your offer in Kite (e.g., a "Free Gift" on orders over $50).
- Important: Since a Free Gift is technically a Product Discount (100% off a specific item), keep this in mind when setting up combination rules.
- Create or Edit Your Shopify Discount
- Navigate to the Discounts section in your Shopify Admin.
- Create a new discount (e.g., "Automatic Discount" or "Amount Off") or select an existing one.
- Scroll down to the Combinations section.
- Enable Stacking (The Critical Step)
- In the "Combinations" section of the Shopify discount, check the box for Product discounts.
- Why? Your Kite Free Gift is a "Product Discount." If this box is unchecked, Shopify will block the Kite offer from triggering if the standard discount is applied (or vice versa).
- Save the discount.
- Verify the Combination
- Go to your storefront.
- Trigger the Kite offer (e.g., add enough items to unlock the Free Gift).
- Ensure the Shopify discount is also active (either automatically applied or by entering a code).
- Both discounts should now appear in the cart breakdown.
Technical Limitations & Rules
- The "Best Discount" Rule: Shopify generally does not allow two Product Discounts to apply to the exact same line item.
- Example: If you have a Kite offer giving 10% off a T-shirt, and a Shopify code giving $5 off that same T-shirt, they will not stack. Shopify will only apply the one that gives the customer the best price.
- Exception: You can stack a Product Discount (e.g., Kite Free Gift) with an Order Discount (e.g., 10% off the whole cart) if "Order Discounts" is selected in the combination settings.
- Checkout Isolation: Remember that "Buy Now" buttons bypass the cart drawer/page. If your Kite offer relies on a cart widget to add a free gift, customers using "Buy Now" may miss the offer entirely.
Troubleshooting Checklist
If your discounts are not stacking as expected, check the following:
- [ ] Check Combination Settings: Did you check the "Combines with Product Discounts" box on the Shopify discount setup page?
- [ ] Check Conflict Priority: Is the Kite offer targeting the same specific product as the Shopify discount? If so, only the best one applies.
- [ ] Verify Discount Types: Are you trying to stack two "Order Discounts"? (e.g., A Kite Tiered Discount on the total cart + A Shopify 10% off code). Shopify limits Order Discount stacking; usually, you can only have one "Order" level discount per transaction.
- [ ] Cart Refresh: If you changed settings, try clearing your cart and refreshing the page to ensure the new rules are loaded.
