This guide explains how to restrict a "Free Gift on Checkout" offer so that it applies only when a customer has a specific type of product in their cart—either a subscription product or a one-time purchase product.


1. Access the Free Gift Rule


First, navigate to the rule you want to modify. You can either create a new "Free Gift on Checkout" promotion or edit an existing one.

  1. Open the Kite app.
  2. Go to the Free Gift on Checkout section.
  3. Click on the specific rule you wish to configure (e.g., "Sample Free Gift").


2. Configure Subscription Eligibility


The settings to control subscription vs. one-time purchase eligibility are located within the additional settings of the rule.

  1. Scroll down to the bottom of the rule configuration page.
  2. Locate and open the Additional Settings section.
  3. Find the Eligibility settings for subscription products option.
  4. Select the option that matches your goal:
    • Subscription products only: The free gift will only be added if a subscription product is in the cart.
    • One-time purchase only: The free gift will only be added if a standard, one-time purchase product is in the cart.
    • All products: (Default) The free gift works for both subscription and one-time purchase items.


3. Save Your Changes


Once you have selected the correct eligibility setting, ensure you save the rule to activate the restriction.

  1. Click Save.
  2. Test the setup on your store by adding a subscription product to your cart and proceeding to checkout to verify the gift appears. Then, try with a one-time product to ensure the gift does not appear (if you selected "Subscription products only").
