How to Hide Add to Cart & Quantity Selectors for Free Gift Products
This guide explains how to prevent customers from manually purchasing items intended only as free rewards (e.g., preventing users from buying a $0.00 gift card directly). We achieve this by creating a custom "View Only" product template.
Step-by-Step Configuration
1. Create a New Product Template
- Go to Online Store > Themes in your Shopify Admin.
- Click Customize next to your active theme.
- In the top-center dropdown menu, select Products > Create template.
- Name: Enter a clear name like
Kite Free Gift. - Based on: Select
Default product. - Click Create template.
2. Hide the Purchasing Elements
- Ensure you are editing the new
Kite Free Gifttemplate. - In the left-hand sidebar (Product Information), find the following blocks and click the Eye Icon (Hide) or remove them:
- Price: Hide to prevent showing the cost (or $0.00).
- Quantity Selector: Hide to stop quantity adjustments.
- Buy Buttons: Critical. Hide "Add to Cart" and "Buy it Now" to prevent manual purchase.
- Save your changes.
3. Assign the Template to the Gift Product
- Exit the Theme Editor and go to Shopify Admin > Products.
- Open the specific product you are using as the free gift.
- Scroll down to the Online Store section (usually on the right sidebar).
- Find the Theme template dropdown menu.
- Change the selection from
Default productto your new template:kite-free-gift. - Click Save.
4. Verify the Result
- Visit your online store and search for the gift product.
- You should see the product details, but no buttons to buy it.
- Note: Kite will still be able to add this product to the cart automatically when the reward criteria are met.
Technical Notes & Limitations
Why is this necessary? If you set a product price to $0.00 for a promotion, customers might find it via search and add it to their cart without qualifying for the deal. This method effectively "locks" the product from human interaction while keeping it available for the app.
Quick Add Buttons: This method hides buttons on the Product Page. If your Collection pages have "Quick Add" buttons, customers might still be able to add the item there. To fix this, you may need to exclude the gift product from your main collections.
Troubleshooting Checklist
- Buttons still visible? You likely forgot Step 3. Creating the template does not automatically apply it. You must manually assign the gift product to that new template in the Product Admin.
- Kite not adding the gift? This template setup does not stop Kite. If the gift isn't appearing, check if the product status is Active (not Draft) and that it has Inventory available.
- Can I sell this product too? No. With this template, regular purchase is blocked. If you want to sell the item and offer it as a gift, duplicate the product: keep one for sale (Default Template) and use the duplicate for the gift (Hidden Template).
