How to Set Up an Automatic Free Gift with an Opt-Out Option

This guide explains how to create a Free Gift offer that automatically appears in the cart when a customer spends a certain amount, while giving them the flexibility to remove (opt-out) and re-add the gift later.

Step-by-Step Configuration

1. Create the Free Gift Offer

  • Navigate to Campaigns > Create New > Free Gift.
  • Condition: Set your threshold (e.g., Spend Amount is 100).
  • Select Product: Choose the item you want to give away.

2. Configure Auto-Add Behavior

  • Add Method: Select Auto-Add (or "Automatically add to cart").
  • Result: As soon as the cart total hits 100, the gift drops into the cart without the user clicking anything.

3. Enable Opt-Out (Crucial Step)

  • Look for a setting labeled "Allow customer to opt-out" or "Enable opt out of free gift".
  • Check/Enable this box.
  • Why? Without this setting, if a customer removes the gift, the app might think they simply haven't claimed it yet and try to force it back, or it might disappear forever. This setting creates a "memory" of the customer's choice.

4. Save & Test

  • Click Save.
  • Test the Flow:
    1. Add items to your cart worth 100+.
    2. Verify: The gift appears automatically.
    3. Opt-Out: Remove the gift from the cart.
    4. Re-Claim: Look for the Kite widget (usually in the cart or drawer). It should now show a "Claim" button. Click it to bring the gift back.

Technical Notes & Limitations

Why let customers opt out? Sometimes a "free gift" adds weight to shipping, or the customer simply doesn't want it. Giving them the choice reduces support tickets and abandoned carts caused by unwanted items.
Widget Visibility: For the "Re-claim" feature to work, you must ensure the Free Gift Widget is enabled and visible on your Cart Page or Side Cart. If the widget is hidden, a customer who deletes the gift cannot get it back without clearing their cookies or contacting support.

Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Gift keeps coming back after removal? You might not have enabled the "Opt-out" setting, or another app is conflicting with the cart logic.
  • No "Claim" button after removal? Check your Widget Settings. If the widget is disabled, the "Claim" button has nowhere to display.
  • Gift not auto-adding? Ensure the product has inventory. Shopify will not auto-add a product that is out of stock.
