This guide explains how to configure a "Manual" Free Gift promotion where customers must actively click a "Claim" button to receive their gift. This is ideal for increasing engagement or allowing customers to choose whether they want the gift added to their cart.

Step-by-Step Configuration

  1. Enable the Kite Theme Extension Before creating the offer, ensure the Kite widget can display on your store.
  • Navigate to your Shopify Admin > Online Store > Themes.
  • Click Customize on your current theme.
  • Under App Embeds (on the left sidebar), ensure Kite is toggled ON. Save changes.
  1. Create the Promotion
  • Open the Kite App dashboard.
  • Select Free Gift with Purchase.
  • Name your promotion (e.g., "Spend $100 Get Gift").
  1. Define the Rules (Triggers)
  • Set the condition required to unlock the gift.
  • Example: Select "Specific cart value" and set the amount to 100.
  • Select the Gift: Choose the product you wish to offer for free (e.g., a specific accessory or gift card).
  1. Set Promotion Type to "Manual" This determines how the gift is added.
  • Select Manual (Customer adds to cart).
  • Configure Rule Logic:
  • Only one gift from all the rules: Use this if you have multiple spending tiers (e.g., Spend $100 get A, Spend $200 get B) and want the customer to receive only the highest tier gift.
  • Multiple gifts (One for each rule): Use this if you want customers to stack gifts as they hit multiple milestones.
  • For this example, since we have one rule (Spend $100), select "Only one gift".
  1. Configure Discount Combinations
  • Ensure the "Combinations" checkbox is selected.
  • Why? This allows the Free Gift to work alongside other automatic discounts or shipping codes the customer might use.

6. Customize the Widget

  • Placement: Choose where the "Claim" widget appears (e.g., Cart Page, Product Pages, or Side Cart).
  • Appearance: Customize the text (e.g., change "Add to Cart" to "Claim your gift"), colors, and fonts to match your brand.
  1. Test the Offer
  • Click Save.
  • Click View Offer or navigate to your storefront.
  • Add items to the cart until the total exceeds 100.
  • Verify that the Widget appears with the "Claim" button.
  • Click the button and ensure the gift adds to the cart at $0.00.

Technical Notes & Limitations

Important: Please review these technical constraints to ensure a smooth customer experience.
  • "Buy Now" Buttons (Dynamic Checkout): Manual Free Gifts will not appear if a customer uses the "Buy Now" button on a product page. This button bypasses the cart drawer/page entirely, skipping the widget trigger. Customers must use the standard "Add to Cart" flow.
  • Gift Product Inventory: Ensure the product you select as a gift has inventory. If the item is out of stock, the widget may fail to add it to the cart.
  • Shopify Plus: If you are on Shopify Plus using Checkout Extensibility, ensure you have added the Kite app block to the checkout editor if you want visibility there.

Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Widget not appearing?
  • Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize and verify the Kite App Embed is ON.
  • Ensure your cart total meets the rule requirement (e.g., is over 100).
  • Gift adding at full price?
  • Check the "Combinations" settings in Kite. If another automatic discount is already applied to the cart and stacking is not allowed, Shopify may prioritize the other discount.
  • Claim button not working?
  • Clear your browser cache or test in an Incognito window to rule out local caching issues.
